Rooted in Black diasporic storytelling, Jamaican dub poetics, Africanfuturist imagination, and decoliberative performance practice, the work explores race, gender, sexuality, spirituality, colonialism, memory, and liberation through a transformative theatrical ceremony inspired by the Black Atlantic water spirit Mami Wata. Beyond the stage, Dr. anitafrika offers a comprehensive scholar-artist residency model that connects theatre, Black Studies, Education, Literature, Creative Writing, Gender Studies, Performance Studies, and community-engaged research through the Anitafrika Dub Praxis. Residencies may include performances, keynote lectures, faculty development programs, student workshops, graduate research seminars, and community engagement initiatives. Set in present-day Xaymaca/Jamaica, the play follows four friends whose lives are shaped by the enduring legacy of colonial anti-queer laws, religious conservatism, and the politics of secrecy. Through dub poetry, ritual movement, masquerade, multimedia, and immersive soundscapes, long-buried truths surface, forcing each character to confront the tensions between loyalty, identity, survival, and freedom.
