Dubbin Praxis: The Anitafrika Method theorises and activates the Anitafrika Dub Praxis as a comprehensive decoliberatory theatre-making system developed by Dr. d’bi.young anitafrika through more than twenty-five years of artistic practice, teaching, research, femtorship and institution-building. The book begins with the proposition that the practitioner is the foundational unit of theatre practice. Before someone becomes an actor, director, playwright, deviser, dramaturg, designer, producer, educator, or artistic leader, a humxn being enters the creative process. That person carries a body, herstories, cultural knowledge, memories, languages, experiences, relationships to power, artistic inheritances, contradictions and possibilities. The Anitafrika Dub Praxis begins there.

Rooted in Ubuntu and informed by African and African-diasporic ways of knowing, Black feminist and queer/transfeminist thought, critical pedagogy, embodied practice and decolonial inquiry, the Praxis asks practitioners to examine who is making, how they are making, what they have inherited, what systems of knowledge they are reproducing, and finally what they are making, from a critically conscious perspective.

At the centre of the Praxis is the Anitafrika Method, organised through three interrelated movements of Self-Transformation, Creative Expression, and Community Embodiment. These movements provide an adaptable architecture through which the practitioner investigates self, develops artistic craft and brings that practice into relationship with collaborators, audiences and communities. The Method sits within the larger ecology of the Anitafrika Dub Praxis, alongside Critical Dub Pedagogy, the Three R Process and Dubography, and is activated through embodied, relational and dramaturgical practices, including Bodyful Practice, Ensemble Integrity Practice, Character Adjacency Practice, Circleturgy and Modes of Storytelling.

The method’s architecture spans the ecology of theatre-making, including acting, directing, playwriting, devising, dramaturgy, design, producing, pedagogy and artistic leadership. Dubbin Praxis investigates these pathways as interconnected play-spaces through which the recurring questions of personhood, power, knowledge, embodiment, craft, relationship, responsibility, and community can be activated in different ways.

Part theory, part methodology and part practical companion, Dubbin Praxis moves between reflection, embodied practice and creative exploration.
