This year South Africa is commemorating 150 years of Charlotte Mannya-Maxeke. A soloist-chorister who toured the UK and USA with ‘African Jubilee Choir’ in 1800’s, and a political activist who later received a scholarship to study at the Wilberforce University in Ohio (USA), making her the first black South African woman to obtain a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree.
In commemoration of this exceptional woman Sereti Sa Basadi – a Sibikwa Arts Centre’s annual womxn festival, under the theme ‘Her-Story (Re-Birthed * Re-Imagined * Re-Lived) will also reflect on over 20 000 sister-friends, who marched to the Union Buildings against pass laws on the 9th of August 1956.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, for 2021 Seriti Sa Basadi, will host a hybrid experience, made of two virtual panel discussions on the 27th & 28th of August, while presenting live performances on the 29th of August. Through artistic threads of feminine works the audience/viewers will experience virtual dialogues, drama, poetry, music, and dance; giving a window into what womxn artists and creatives are doing in the theatre landscape.
